Hello and welcome to my Dreaming of Croatia Blog! I am so happy to have you here!
My name is Magdalena Jelec, but my closest friends call me Megi (spelled just like Maggie). Feel free to do the same.

Who is Megi?
I was born and raised in Croatia, in a town called Slavonski Brod, which is off the beaten path and in a region of Slavonia still left unexplored.
When I turned 18, I went to Osijek, a nearby city to study Croatian Language & Literature and History, for which I got my Master’s Degree. My dream since I was a little kid was to teach in a school, but sadly the employment market in Croatia some 10 years ago was very bad and I struggled a lot to find a job. I was working as a teacher here and there, but could not get permanent employment.
Besides all things Croatia, history and teaching, my greatest passion was travelling and exploring the world. Eventually, I got an opportunity to work in London and went there with my husband. We lived there for 8 years, travelled a lot and then in 2024 I did the biggest step in my life ever and decided to focus full time on my main travel blog Megi Vorera.
However, after 8y of living in the UK, I got very nostalgic for my country, endless sunshine and relaxed life, so in May 2026 me and my husband moved back to Croatia, again to our home town Slavonski Brod, which is where I currently reside.

How Was Dreaming of Croatia Born?
Initially, I wrote about 15 blog posts for my main travel blog and simultaneously, I also started the Croatia Travel Tips Facebook Group, which is very engaging btw, so feel free to join!
The more I wrote about Croatia and the more questions I got in my group, I realised that a separate site was very much needed to cover everything Croatia. At that point, I knew I was going to move back to my country and that I will be able to explore and create fresh content constantly to keep you up to date.
But, I didn’t want Dreaming of Croatia to be just another Croatia travel site, I wanted it to be more than that. As I studied History and Croatian Language & Literature, I felt qualified to write about topics that you won’t find easily or in more depth on other sites, things like food, culture, tradition and our own history.
So, Dreaming of Croatia is more than a travel blog post, it is a wholesome site of everything Croatia. It’s your gateway to travel, taste and explore Croatia, to learn about us, our history, tradition. There are also a lot of travel tips here, don’t worry!

What Can You Expect from Dreaming of Croatia?
On Dreaming of Croatia you will find Destination Guides for every region, both most popular and underrated gems. You will also receive plenty of practical travel tips to enable you to explore Croatia stress-free.
But, if you’d love to learn more about our country, you can expect topics on history and heritage, culture and tradition, such as our superstitions, most famous scientists, the meaning of the flag, to just name a few.
Additionally, you can not only learn about our food, but you will also find our traditional recipes on the site, so that after your trip ends, you can try out these dishes at your home.
Dreaming of Croatia is a site that was built off of the 30+ years of living, breathing and being Croatian, so you know that you’ve got covered by someone who has Croatia in their DNA.

What Does the Logo of Dreaming of Croatia Represent?
Before you leave, I just wanted to briefly explain the meaning of the Dreaming of Croatia logo.
In the medieval times Croatia has been using the Glagolitic script, up until the 16th century when it was replaced by the Latin alphabet.
The Glagolitic letter S, which is in the middle of the logo, also had a meaning, which was WORD.
As my blog post is about Croatia and I use words to write posts, I wanted to combine our history and tradition with the purpose of this site. The green colour represents olive trees and Croatia is well-known for its olive oil. The symbols are olive tree and the sea, which is what largely defines Croatia.
So, the logo is just a nice metaphorical way of explaining what Dreaming of Croatia is about and what can you expect from it.
Hope you find things here useful and thank you for reading! 💚
